ZIMBABWE POLICE FORCE IN NEED OF URGENT REFORM
In Zimbabwe, one group of people stands out for their misunderstanding of the country’s political and economic reality. This group is the highly politicized police force. They have moved far away from being professional and competent. This shows a big need for change so they can become a true police service.
The problem is that this police force acts as the main protector of a situation that cannot last. This situation is not good for the country. Some people might think that the police’s well-being is not connected to the citizens’ well-being. But this is wrong. The police might scare people from using their basic rights.Normally, the police’s well-being should be the same as the citizens’. But in Zimbabwe, it seems different. The police often hurt people, but they do not face the usual punishments for such actions. This is not how a good society should work.
The ruling party, ZANU PF, often breaks the country’s top law. They do this to stay in power against the people’s wishes. This breaking of the law means the citizens are not protected and live in fear. The police help the ruling party, so they do not get punished for their actions. It is worrying that the police do not show the professionalism and respect for the law that is expected. They live in poor conditions and are paid very low wages. This does not match their actions. It seems like the police are under a spell, still supporting the ruling party even though they live in poverty.
The unprofessional police force does not get the services that all Zimbabweans are promised by the law. The ruling party weakens the law to keep their power and exploit the people. The party does not care about the police’s well-being, even though the police help them stay in power.
It is very sad that the police, who should protect citizens’ rights, have become a tool for keeping an illegitimate power structure. In doing this, the police’s rights and well-being are greatly affected. This situation needs a big change in how the police force in Zimbabwe is managed. The focus should be on making sure the police’s well-being is the same as the citizens’ well-being.
The police should protect the people, not just the ruling party. To do this, they need better conditions and proper respect for their work. The law must be strong and fair for everyone. Only then can Zimbabwe have a police force that truly serves its people.
